Bishop R.H. Dignan officially proclaimed, opened and blessed the parish of St. Veronica's in the early morning of Sunday August 30, 1936 and the first parish priest was Fr. Leo Smith.
In July of 1955 the Church was heavily damaged by fire but was quickly rebuilt through the love and support of it's parishioners. The Italian community was then and remains a stronghold in the parish. The first city wide St. Anthony celebration with Bishop Jean-Louis Plouffe was held on June 13, 2004. It was a very successful event, with approximately 600 people in attendance.
Renovations continued over the years with the rectory, the interior, the large foyer entrance to enclose the front stairway, and the Fr. Dan Zorzi Hall. With the closure of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, arrangements were made to have six of their stained glass windows safely removed, refurbished and installed in the Church foyer. Also in celebration of the 75th anniversary in 2011, a stained glass window showing the face of Jesus, held by the hands of St. Veronica, was designed and completed to commemorate the occasion.
Within the parish, six men have been ordained to the priesthood and four women consecrated to religiious life. During the parishes history, the two longest serving parish priests were Fr. Victor J. O'Donnell (1948-1969) who died in residence at St. Veronica's December 25, 1979 and Fr. James Rent (1987-1999).
During the 1940's the parish fielded many competitive men and women's baseball teams. The men's team became the 1944 Sault Ste. Marie and Northern Ontario champions. The Holy Name Men's Group and the Catholic Women's League were and are presently active in the parish.
With thanks to God, all the parishioners who built and who maintain the parish, to the present pastor, who is dedicated to the well being of the church, St. Veronica's has a community modeled on the example of Jesus. St. Veronica's Parish continues to be an inspirational Catholic presence in Sault Ste. Marie, by proclaiming, celebrating and living the Gospel and caring for the community through numerous outreach initiatives.
